Join Captain Ryan for a memorable day underwater
The creator of this unique charter, Captain Ryan Jenkins! PADI Scuba Dive Instructor, Freedive Instructor, Spearfishing instructor, Master Captain, Dive Guide and more. With years of experience, Ryan has made The Florida Keys his home and Passion. You find him under the waves more often than not!
Whether you’re a novice angler or an experienced deepwater hunter, our team of licensed and certified captains and divemasters are here to show you the best spearfishing the Keys has to offer. We use high-quality spearfishing equipment and our captains have decades of experience underwater.
New to the sport? We have four-hour trips over shallow reefs in 10-15′ of water. For experienced spearfishers, we have dive-only deepwater wrecks and freediving bluewater excursions targeting some of the most iconic species in the Keys. We pride ourselves on providing a safe, educational, and fun spearfishing trip for your group.
Main Spearfishing Seasons
Spearfishing is great in the Keys year round but there are some target species we can only legally harvest during certain seasons:
- Lobster – August-March
- Grouper May-December
- Hogfish – May-October
Blue Star Dive Operators
By choosing a Blue Star Dive Operator, you’re not just selecting a spearfishing trip; you’re supporting a business dedicated to sustainable tourism in the Florida Keys.
Where We Go
We offer three different types of Spearfishing Experiences, shallow reef patches, deeper reefs and wrecks, and offshore blue water. Whether you’re new to the sport or an experienced diver, we have a mix of spearfishing locations and species to target throughout the year. We decide where to go based on your dive experience, comfort level, and what you’d like to target. This is all group dependent. It’s our mission to provide the most exhilarating and safe spearfishing experience based on the conditions we have.
Per Florida law, we have to be three miles offshore in federal waters to legally spearfish. Depending on the seasons and the weather, we’re heading to wrecks north of Islamorada, reefs south of Alligator Lighthouse, or offshore to the humps.
Spearfishing For Beginners (4-6 Hours)
We love teaching beginners and younger folks how to safely spearfish. We’re running these trips in 10-15′ of water on shallow patches of reef. You will always have a professional divemaster with you as a guide. Target species include grouper and snapper.
Deeper reefs and wrecks (6-8 Hours)
These are scuba-only and are not for beginners as it’s an advanced dive. We’re heading to some of the most iconic wrecks in the keys in 30′-90′ of water. Target species include black grouper, mutton snapper, and cubera snapper. Occasionally we’ll get our sights on yellow jack, amberjack, and a rare african pompano. We will take a break halfway through the trip to come back, swap out tanks, and eat lunch before heading back out for another hunt.
Bluewater Spearfishing (6-8 Hours)
We’re heading 15-20 miles offshore to the humps and reefs targeting mahi mahi and other popular pelagic species that hang on the surface in deep water. As we’re running, we’re scanning the ocean surface for weedlines, birds, and debris. We’ll start with fishing rods, casting bait to keep locate and attract the fish. Once we’re on a school, we’ll get you in the water and the hunt is on!
Wahoo are a little different, usually on the reef edge or drifting bluewater over the wrecks. We use flashers to entice these fish in to get close enough for a shot. You’re using a bigger gun with a float bag and a line. Once you take your shot, that fish is going to run!
